 What is Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit?

The purpose of this program is to provide the opportunity for advanced high school students to earn college credit prior to graduation from high school. 

A Dual Enrolled Student is a student who is enrolled in a community or junior college or state institution of higher learning while enrolled in high school.  Upon completion of each Dual Enrollment course, the student will receive the appropriate number of college credits (college credit is reserved until after high-school graduation) as listed in the Holmes Community College Bulletin. 

A Dual Credit Student is a student who is enrolled in a community or junior college or state institution of higher learning while enrolled in high school and who is receiving both high school credit and college credit for postsecondary coursework.  Upon completion of each Dual Credit course, the student will receive the appropriate number of college credits (college credit is reserved until after high-school graduation) as listed in the Holmes Community College Bulletin and will receive credit that will also be applied to meet high school graduation requirements as verified by the high school principal.  Articulation of college credits will be left to the discretion of the high school, although recommendations will be made by Holmes Community College.

  • Provides opportunity for advanced high school students to earn college credit prior to graduation from high school
  • Shortens the time to attain a college degree
  • Provides students with college credit that is transferable to a college or university
  • Grades earned through Dual Credit will become part of the students’ permanent high school and college transcripts while those grades and credits earned through Dual Enrollment will only be recorded on the college transcript.
  • Eases the transition from high school to college by exposing students to the expectations and rigors of postsecondary education
  • Motivates students to follow through to a postsecondary education as they become familiar with college responsibilities
  • Allows students to use the college library, labs, and other facilities and equipment

Who is eligible?

  • The student must have earned 14 core high school units such as English, mathematics, science, social science, or foreign language and/or have a high school junior status, or the student must have scored a minimum composite ACT score of 30 or the equivalent SAT score.
  • The student must have an overall “B” average on all high school courses. The student must follow the Placement Guide as some college courses require ACT or COMPASS test scores as pre-requisites. 

Are all college courses available?

  • For Dual Credit, a Statewide Academic Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit Enrollment Articulation Agreement list has identified a list of courses that high schools shall accept toward meeting the high school graduation requirements. 
  • For Dual Enrollment, students may enroll in any college course provided they have completed the application process.  Prerequisites and co-requisites as stipulated in the Holmes Community College Bulletin will be followed.

When and where may courses be taken?

Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit courses may be offered on the college campus or other approved locations, at the high school, or through our Advanced College Enrollment (ACE) Program that is provided through the Holmes e-Learning Department.  Students are responsible for providing their own transportation to the college campus. 

Who pays the college tuition?

  • The student or parents/legal guardians of the participating student are responsible for the tuition charges and other costs for the college course unless these costs are covered by grants, scholarships, or the school district. 
  • Regardless of the source of payment, all levied charges and fees must be paid directly to Holmes Community College.  The student’s final grades will not be released to the high school until all student debts are paid in full. 
  • Tuition charges for the student participating in this program will be reviewed annually and, if changes are made, notice will be given to the high school before courses begin. 

Who pays for the textbook?

The student is responsible for the cost and acquisition of textbooks unless the high school is providing it. 

Is there financial aid available?

  • Sumners Grant is available for Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit students who apply on line and reside in one of the five Sumner counties, which include Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Montgomery, and Webster.  Students will be eligible based on enrollment status.
  • Federal Financial Aid including Pell Grant and loans are not available for Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit students.
  • State Grants including MTAG and MESG are not available for Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit students. 

What is the application process?

  • The student must complete the Holmes Community College Registration and Orientation processes for enrollment.  ACT or Compass placement tests may be required for certain courses.
  • The student shall request that the high school principal send an official copy of his/her high school transcript to the Admissions and Records Office at Holmes Community College at least 10 days before the beginning of the enrollment period. 
  • The principal or counselor of the high school must submit an unconditional recommendation supporting the student’s enrollment in the program.  The unconditional recommendation should verify that the student is academically advanced and has the maturity and self-discipline required to benefit from this type of program.  This recommendation may be in the form of a list of all participating students and should be included with the high school transcripts. 
  • The student requests to be advised and then registers for classes through My Doghouse.
