Placement Testing

Holmes CC administers ACCUPLACER, an untimed computerized assessment, to provide incoming students with immediate results of skill levels in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. The higher score of ACT and ACCUPLACER determines the student's optimal curriculum as acknowledged in the Holmes CC placement and prerequisite/corequisite tables.  Holmes CC will administer the ACCUPLACER Next Generation tests for placement testing, but previous ACCUPLACER Classic scores and COMPASS scores may still be used for placement purposes.

If ACT scores are not available at the time of registration, ACCUPLACER placement tests may be taken to make such recommendations. If one wishes to challenge an ACT placement, it is recommended that the student view the ACCUPLACER Test Information (below) prior to taking ACCUPLACER tests.  Students may take ACCUPLACER on the designated registration date(s) or by appointment with a campus representative listed below. Holmes Community College offers ACCUPLACER only to Holmes CC students and no testing fee is applied.  ACCUPLACER scores taken at any other institution will not be accepted.

Placement into General College Studies (DS) Major

A student who places into two or more Pre-Core Studies courses based on placement within the areas of English and mathematics will be assigned a General College Studies (DS) advisor to facilitate the student's completion of the core curriculum required for graduation. Once Pre-Core Studies courses are concluded, the student will be transferred to an advisor of one's major/concentration area.

ACCUPLACER Test Information

Students are strongly encouraged to view test information such as sample test questions, test-taking tips, and a downloadable student study app provided by ACCUPLACER. Note that only the computer calculator is permitted for use when taking the ACCUPLACER mathematics test. For additional information or to schedule a ACCUPLACER placement test, contact the appropriate campus representative listed below. Proof of acceptance to Holmes Community College (Holmes ID Number) and a valid form of identification, preferably a Photo ID such as a driver's license or school ID, must be presented to the test proctor before one is allowed to take ACCUPLACER at any Holmes CC test site. Prohibited items, such as cell phones, calculators, resource materials, etc., will not be allowed in the testing center.

Out-of-State Students

If you live out-of-state where coming to one of our campus locations for testing would not be a viable option, then you can request to take your ACCUPLACER test via Examity online by clicking here to complete the necessary form.  You will be charged a fee of $25 per proctored session by Examity in order to take your ACCUPLACER test.  You are required to have a computer with a microphone, a web cam, and a HIGH SPEED Internet connection.  The computer must be in a TIDY and UNDISTURBED environment where you can conduct your test session.  Once your request for online ACCUPLACER testing has been approved and processed, you will receive an email containing a voucher number and information with additional instructions.
